10-year Anniversary of the 2003 Convention on the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage and the opening of the 5th Quang Nam Heritage Festival at the Hoi An Theatre
Hoi An, 22 June – The opening of the Quang Nam Heritage Festival will be held tonight at the Hoi An Theatre, attended by delegations of ASEAN countries, Japan, Korea, Vietnamese authorities and UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova.
The Festival celebrates the 10th anniversary of the 2003 Convention on the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage and the second UNESCO Cultural and Development Week in Viet Nam. The event will be transmitted live on VTV1.
The Festival is an opportunity to celebrate the power of culture in development at the local level and includes numerous cultural attractions free of charge open to public during the week, such as the ASEAN Cultural Heritage Space exhibition, an international choral competition, Cham Cultural Festive Day, and a public art festival of Viet Nam’s ethnic minority groups.
The Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage is a UNESCO treaty adopted by its member states with the main purpose of safeguarding intangible cultural heritage and ensuring appreciation thereof.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Ms. Bokova paid tribute “to Viet Nam’s commitment to safeguarding and promoting cultural heritage and cultural diversity for the benefit of future generations. This commitment is embodied in Viet Nam’s implementation of the 2003 Convention through a strong legal framework, through education and the engagement of young people. Viet Nam’s work is exemplary and should be shared with other Member States.”
