Awareness raising session on disaster risk reduction for local communities organized in Hue
31 August, Hue City – The Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) and UNESCO held an awareness raising session today on disaster risk reduction for local community as part of the MOET, UNESCO and Samsung Initiative for Education for Sustainable Development in Viet Nam.
90 participants attended the awareness raising, including parents, community members, local authorities, school principals, representatives of School Steering Committees of Flood and Storm Prevention and Control and Natural Disaster Mitigation, representatives of local unions and associations and local journalists. An international expert in disaster risk reduction worked with participants, with the support of the Thua Thien-Hue Province Department of Education and Training, Hue University, MOET, the National Institute for Education Management, the Ministry of Information and Communications and Radio Voice of Viet Nam, to raise the awareness of stakeholders at the community level in the area of disaster preparedness and response through a risk assessment session.
Speaking at the meeting, UNESCO Representative to Viet Nam, Katherine Muller-Marin, stressed the importance of local community in establishing an enabling environment for Education for Sustainable Development for children to learn about disaster risk reduction.
During the session, participants took part in an exercise simulating an emergency situation and then held discussions on how to better coordinate with each other. They also learned about disaster management and risk reduction concepts and discussed the importance of education in good disaster risk reduction practices for local communities. Using international and local examples relevant in the country’s context and priorities, the participants identified practices that they can apply in their schools, homes and communities to be better prepared for disasters.
Participants in the awareness raising session will take part in other activities within the Education for Sustainable Development Initiative, in particular developing School Disaster Preparedness Plans and Community Action Plans for Climate Change Response.
