Ha Giang, 19 September – Today, an inauguration workshop on the development of a site visitor management plan for Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark is being held in Ha Giang, co-organized by the People’s Committee of Ha Giang province, the Management Board of the Geopark and UNESCO Viet Nam.

Following the inauguration, the management board and relevant local stakeholders will attend a five-day training course on development of the management plan utilizing UNESCO’s Public Use Planning (PUP) methodology.

The PUP methodology, designed by the Sustainable Tourism Programme at UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre, equips management board staff with methodologies to actively participate local communities and relevant stakeholders of protected sites at the beginning of the planning process, ensuring community benefits are better reflected in the plans and increasing their sustainability. Following the success of pilot projects utilizing PUP methodology in Quang Nam from 2009 to 2011, it was introduced in March this year as a management tool for all the country’s heritage sites and biosphere reserves by the Viet Nam National Administration of Tourism and UNESCO.

The preparation of a management plan will include participation from relevant stakeholders and communities in Dong Van’s old quarter, the historical relic site of Vuong family and the cultural and community tourism village Thien Huong. The action planning process is proposed for one year from September 2012 to August 2013. By the end of this period the Management Board is expected to have completed an extensive site visitor management and development plan. The plan will include a clear model for information and interpretation packages, identification of a list of tourist attractions with descriptions which could be used for on-site interpretation and plans for the development of information centres at Dong Van Karst Plateau. The plan will also prioritize products and services that integrate the outstanding values of nature and culture of the Geopark, in particular the values of the ethnic communities of Ha Giang province. It will further identify a set of monitoring indicators and provide a framework for key conservation management activities to be completed.

Participants of the inauguration workshop include: leaders of the People’s Committee of Ha Giang province, National Programme Coordinator in Culture - UNESCO Viet Nam Chairman of the Management Board of Dong Van Karst Plateau Global Geopark, Ha Giang Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Leaders of Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van and Meo Vac districts, Ha Giang Department of Information, Ha Giang Department of Foreign Affairs, staff of the Dong Van Karst Plateau Global Geopark Management team and representatives from national and provincial media.
