Kien Giang awarded biosphere reserve status
Kien Giang, 24 June 2010 -- Katherine Muller-Marin, UNESCO Representative to Viet Nam, bestowed upon Kien Giang the certificate of World’s Biosphere Reserve, approved by decision of the International Coordinating Council of the Man and the Biosphere Program of UNESCO.
Kien Giang represents the most typical and diverse tropical ecosystem in Viet Nam, and is one of the largest biosphere reserves in South East Asia. It has set a goal to preserve the ecosystem through scientific research and careful management practices with the active commitment, participation and benefit of the local community, working together to enable a harmonized relationship between man and nature.
With a great array of marine life, aquaculture, forests, wetlands, mangroves, and beautiful landscapes, Kien Giang Biosphere Reserve presents an excellent opportunity for tourism development, especially ecotourism. At the same time, it is a valuable treasure that helps protect the country from the effects of climate change.
