New orientation for MAB in Viet Nam and the World Network of Biosphere Reserves

Ha Noi, 20 March 2014 – The Viet Nam Man and Biosphere Programme (MAB) National Committee of the Viet Nam National Commission for UNESCO inaugurated its new board members today, strengthening the leadership and competence of the Committee.

Following the Prime Ministers decision, members operating in their respective fields of expertise were appointed from the:

· Center for Environmental Research and Education, Hanoi National University of Education;

· Department of Social and Natural Sciences, Ministry of Science and Technology;

· Department of Conservation and Biodiversity, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

The newly-established board has been organized to include one President and two Vice Presidents of the Viet Nam MAB National Committee in addition to one representative from each of the eight World Biosphere Reserves in Viet Nam.

The inauguration took place during a workshop of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves in Viet Nam (WNBR). Speaking at the event, the UNESCO Representative in Viet Nam, Dr. Katherine Muller-Marin, highlighted the importance placed on biodiversity and ecosystems, and their inherent linkages to poverty eradication and climate change, as one of the key focus areas in the post – 2015 agenda of the UN Open Working Group of the General Assembly. UNESCO holds the position of the Secretariat of the Intergovernmental Committee for MAB.

The workshops achievements also included the presentation of the Action Plan of the WNBR Reserve Sites in Vietnam for 2014 and beyond, establishing next steps towards and the orientation of future WNBR Viet Nam activities, as well as rich discussions on draft operating regulations of the Management Board of the World Biosphere Reserve Site in Vietnam.

The enthusiasm shown by the participants contributed to a motivating session on one of Viet Nam’s most valuable treasures: its biospheres.
