UNESCO and national partners explore social science sustainable development opportunities
Ha Noi, 13 August 2011 – Representatives from UNESCO Viet Nam, the Viet Nam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS), the National Commission for UNESCO (NatCom) and leading academics met to discuss opportunities for developing the social sciences in Viet Nam and the sector’s potential role in the country’s sustainable development.
The conference opened with speeches from NatCom Secretary General Pham Cao Phong, VASS President Do Hoai Nam and UNESCO Representative Katherine Muller-Marin. In her opening remarks, Ms. Muller-Marin highlighted the import role of the Social Science Sector as a catalyst for the "social transformation" that the country would have to go undergo on the path to achieving educational and economic targets.
Conference participants engaged in an open discussion on the importance of social transformation and social science research in Viet Nam’s development. Sharing some of the most recent research in Viet Nam, academics and directors of educational institutes gave presentations in the fields of archaeology, linguistics and ethnology.
