UNESCO Director-General makes official visit to Viet Nam
Ha Noi, 19 June – Today, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova arrives in Viet Nam for a three-day official visit at the invitation of the Viet Nam Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Ms. Bokova and the President of the Vietnamese National Commission for UNESCO cum Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Thanh son will jointly hold a press conference with Vietnamese media to discuss her visit and answer questions.
During the visit, the Director-General will meet with Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and other high level leaders to discuss Viet Nam-UNESCO cooperation, formalized in the Memorandum of Understanding between Viet Nam and UNESCO for the period 2010-2015. She will also attend the 5th Quang Nam Heritage Festival, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Heritage and coinciding with the second UNESCO Culture and Development Week in Viet Nam.
During a visit to the Diplomatic Academy of Viet Nam to visit with students and meet with President of the Vietnamese National Commission for UNESCO cum Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Thanh Son and other officials, Ms. Bokova will receive a Doctor Honoris Causa from the Academy.
While in Quang Nam, the Director-General will attend numerous events, including meeting with Mr. Le Phuoc Thanh Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee and an award ceremony for the “World Heritage in Your Hands” Art Contest, a nationwide contest encouraging young people to reflect on the importance of World Heritage, the launching of an exhibit on archaeological excavations in My Son, the opening of the restored G Group My Son monuments to the public, the opening of a Hoi An Tourism Information Centre, the launch of an exhibit highlighting achievements between the Quang Nam Province and UNESCO partnership to promote culture for sustainable development, and the opening ceremony of the 5th Quang Nam Heritage Festival in Hoi An.
Ms. Bokova will also make a visit to Thua Thien-Hue Province to meet with Mr. Nguyen Van Cao the Chairman of the People’s Committee and other provincial authorities to discuss cooperation with UNESCO, highlighting the implementation of the Education for Sustainable Development Initiative, funded by UNESCO and Samsung. A special presentation on Nha Nhac music will be showcased to show the Director-General the results of the training provided by UNESCO for the sustainability of this intangible heritage for younger generations.
