UNESCO Director-General receives Doctor Honoris Causa from Diplomatic Academy of Viet Nam
Ha Noi, 21 June - This morning, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova attended a ceremony at the Diplomatic Academy of Viet Nam where she was awarded a Doctor Honoris Causa. Ms. Bokova held a meeting with the President of the Diplomatic Academy, Mr. Dang Dinh Quy.
Also present at the ceremony were 70 post-graduate students of the academy, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Son, President of NatCom cum Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs; Mr. Pham Cao Phong, Secretary-General of NatCom; Mrs. Tran Thi Hoang Mai, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Cultural Diplomacy and UNESCO Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Cynthia Guttman, Executive Officer at the Office of the Director-General of UNESCO; and Dr. Katherine Muller-Marin, UNESCO Representative to Viet Nam and Head of Ha Noi Office.
In her remarks at the ceremony, the Director-General said “I accept this Doctor Honoris Causa on behalf of UNESCO as a sign of trust in our work, as a reflection of your commitment to the mandate that guides us”. Speaking to the over 70 post-graduate students of the Academy, Ms. Bokova encouraged them to work towards the shaping of a new global development agenda in which “culture is a source of strength and cohesion, a force for dialogue and understanding, and an enabler of sustainable development.”
