The UNESCO Regional Office for Southern Africa (ROSA) in collaboration with the International Police Organisation (INTERPOL) Regional Bureau for Southern Africa and the Southern African Regional Police Chiefs Co-operation Organisation (SARPCCO) will conduct a regional workshop on the prevention and fight against illicit trafficking of cultural property from 29-30 August 2017 in Ezulwini Valley, Swaziland.

Police, Customs and Prosecution officials from 15 Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries are expected to participate in the workshop which seeks to develop their capacities to prevent and fight against illicit trafficking of cultural property as well as the restitution of stolen or illegally exported objects.

The workshop further aims to establish preventive measures for inventories of cultural property; raise  awareness  on  the  need  to  adopt  effective  national  legislations  and develop regional cooperation; improve the extent and quality of information sharing between different agencies; build strong partnership at national, regional and international levels to enhance investigative cooperation; and share best practices among other objectives.

ROSA is committed to the strengthening of regional cooperation in the protection of cultural property and has over the years conducted several activities to achieve this. The Office supported the establishment of the SADC Heritage Association to spearhead the protection of cultural property in the region. It has also supported countries in the region to ratify and implement conventions on the protection of cultural property, in particular the 1970 Convention for the fight against the illicit trafficking of cultural property and the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict.
