Zimbabwe’s new education curriculum hailed

Zimbabwe’s new education curriculum has been hailed for fostering entrepreneurship and opening up opportunities for Zimbabweans to be skillful and innovative.

Delivering his keynote address at the Third Education Conference and Expo held in Harare on 30th August 2017, President Robert Gabriel Mugabe said the new curriculum will shed off the employee mentality among students.

“The issue of sustainability is embedded in the new curriculum which fosters entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship education and training is meant to inculcate abilities for learners, at all levels, with knowledge, values of unhu/ubuntu, skills and appropriate motivation, and to encourage entrepreneurial success in a variety of settings,” he said.

The new curriculum is a product of a consultative process which UNESCO supported, with the view of ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting life-long learning opportunities for all as espoused under Sustainable Development Goal 4.

Third Education Conference and Expo 2017 was held under the theme, “Education for innovation and sustainable socio-economic development.”

President Mugabe said the use of technology in innovative teaching and learning cannot be overemphasized as large classes can be taught effectively using computers.

The Conference emphasized the need for the Zimbabwean educational system to produce individuals who are self-reliant and can display their acquired skills at various exit points. Dignitaries from Cuba, Korea, Botswana, Malaysia and Australia among others participated in the conference and presented at the ministerial round table, which tackled issues such as curriculum, ICT, agriculture, mind-set education, renewable energy and sustainable water use, sports, tourism, youth empowerment and working together with the girl child, among others.

Teachers were called upon to equip learners with diverse skills and competencies that will add value to the country’s resources. Some of the key skills highlighted were problem solving, critical thinking, leadership, communication, teamwork as well as technological skills.

Educators were implored to embrace technology in the delivery of their lessons, teachers were urged to relearn, to learn and make a habit of lifelong learning, and finally to transfer this zeal for lifelong learning to their learners and so prepare them to be citizens of the future.
