Culturally appropriate responses to HIV & AIDS

UNESCO's work on culture and HIV & AIDS concentrates on two main lines of action to ensure that the global HIV and AIDS response is effective and relevant for diverse communities around the world:

  • The promotion of socio-cultural approaches throughout HIV and AIDS prevention, treatment, support and care strategies and programmes in order to effectively meet the needs of different communities; and
  • The promotion of arts and creativity within the development and implementation of culturally appropriate responses to HIV and AIDS.

Both components are pursued through action-oriented research, training, capacity building and the development of various resources, tools and projects:

  • eLearning Modules
  • Dialogue and Research
  • Traditional Healers Project
  • Annotated Bibliography on Culture, HIV & AIDS
