UN-SRSG Tours Erbil Citadel

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary General to Iraq, Martin Kobler, toured the Citadel of Erbil on 22 October 2011, visiting its heritage buildings and the “Erbil Citadel Revitalization Project”, currently under implementation by UNESCO and the High Commission for Erbil Citadel Revitalization (HCECR).

The SRSG was accompanied by the Head of Office of UNAMI in Erbil, and, was received by the representative of the High Commission for Erbil Citadel Revitalization and staff of UNESCO Iraq.

Mr. Kobler expressed much interest in the Citadel’s history and cultural heritage remains, and was impressed with the current efforts of the Kurdistan authorities and UNESCO towards its rehabilitation.

Building upon the accomplishments of the first phase which saw a Master Plan created for the Citadel, UNESCO Iraq is currently in the midst of Phase II of the Erbil Citadel Revitalization Project, focusing on implementing conservation and rehabilitation measures for this well known historic site in the heart of Erbil, as well as the institutionalization of the High Commission for the Erbil Citadel Revitalization.
