(TVET) Technical and Vocational Education and Training

The TVET sector in Iraq suffers from low enrolment, and increased dropout rates. This is due to oudated teaching and training programmes that do not reflect the modern technological needs required by the labour market, and a limited awareness of the importance of the TVET sector in economic development and poverty reduction. The Government of Iraq’s National Development Plan (2010-2014) identifies eradicating poverty, increasing employment and assisting vulnerable groups as priorities.

In this field, UNESCO has been supporting the efforts of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research's Foundations of Technical Education (MoHESR/FTE), and the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs' Vocational Technical Centres (MoLSA/VTC) in both Central and Kurdistan Regions to respond to these challenges and restore a quality technical and vocational system in all of Iraq.
