Fighting Youth Unemployment through Education

Youth make up 62.8% of Iraq's population and almost 1 million of them (aged 15-24) are registered as unemployed. Persisting high unemployment rates and low prospects for decent jobs put many young people at risk of falling into a spiral of violence. The high unemployment rate of educated youth highlights the need to rethink the way education is delivered, and provide entrepreneurship skills. UNESCO sponsored project "Fighting Youth Unemployment through Education" strives to give graduates from Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) schools and institutes of the Kurdistan governorate the opportunity to develop entrepreneurship skills and the necessary competences to open and manage their own small business. Through a generous fund from the government of Japan, this project allows youth to be more proactive, create their own prosperity, fulfil their dreams and become less dependent on government and public employment.
