UNESCO & PSF celebrate World Science Day 2011
UNESCO Islamabad Office and Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) marked the World Science Day (WSD) by organizing a special event on November 22, 2011 at PSF auditorium to renew their commitment for using Science for Peace and Development.
WSD is observed all over the world on November 10 to mark the achievements of women and men in science and technology. PSF and UNESCO observe this day every year in a befitting manner, but this year due to Eidul Azha holidays in Pakistan, the Day was celebrated on November 22 so that maximum number of people and students could participate in it.
Prof. Dr. M. Masoom Yasinzai, Vice Chancellor (VC), Quaid-e-Azam University (QAU), Islamabad was the chief guest of this event.The speakers included Dr. Manzoor H. Soomro, Chairman PSF, Dr. Kozue Kay Nagata Director/Representative UNESCO and Dr. Ghulam Akbar, Senior Director/National Program Manager, WWF-Pakistan, who highlighted the importance of the science and the change it brought in our lives. Elaborating this year’s theme as declared by UNESCO “World Science Day for Peace and Development – Towards Green Societies through Equity, Inclusiveness and Participation”, the speakers talked about different challenges posed by climatic changes, biodiversity loss and natural disasters. They stressed the need to manage our natural resources for sustainability of biodiversity for the benefit of mankind.
The chief guest and the PSF Chairman also awarded prizes to winner students of 21st annual science poster and science essay competitions for the year 2010-11.
