Al Azhar University Students Visit UNESCO

Jakarta, Friday, 26 May 2017

A study visit of 39 students from Department of International Relations, Al Azhar University of Indonesia (UAI) and more particularly of the international class of International Organizations and Regimes visited UNESCO Jakarta for a brief session on UNESCO and its works and programmes.

The aim of the study visit is to learn some aspects about international organizations and regimes, combined with further understanding on Indonesia's national interests. Senior lecturer, Ambassador H.E. Mr. Ahlan B. Razif and Mr. Yasmi Adriansyah also accompanied this student visit.

Mr. Shahbaz Khan, Director and Representative of UNESCO Jakarta, was very please in welcoming the study visit. In his welcoming speech, he also explained UNESCO mission is to create peace in the minds of people and to help promote sustainable development. He further explained sustainable development means development that does not leave anyone behind, development that does not exploit the resources.

Mr. Khan reminded students to be proud of being an Indonesian. Indonesia possesses extraordinary cultural and natural wealth. He pointed that Indonesia is a very special country. It represents maximum example of harmony and unity in diversities and ‘Gotong Royong’ (working together).

Mr. Zakki Gunawan represented UNESCO Jakarta in giving a short presentation on UNESCO Jakarta programmes and activities. The students were very keen to learn how UNESCO works in enhancing education, science, and culture in Indonesia in particular and the Asia Pacific region in general. After the presentation, students responded with questions mainly on the challenges in implementing UNESCO missions and how to join UNESCO. Overall, students are very positive with what UNESCO Jakarta Office has done for Indonesia and the region.
