ASEAN forum highlights media and information literacy

The importance of media and information literacy was highlighted during the “ASEAN-JAIF Media Information Literacy Forum: Cyber Wellness for the Youth” which took place in Manila from 20-21 March 2018.

During the conference, which was participated by member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Dr. Ming-Kuok LIM, the Advisor for Communication and Information of UNESCO Office in Jakarta presented an overview of UNESCO’s work in the area of MIL including standard-setting, awareness raising and capacity building. The media and information literacy programme is one of the strategic areas of collaboration between UNESCO and ASEAN.

According to UNESCO, MIL is “a set of competencies that empowers citizens to access, retrieve, understand, evaluate and use, create as well as share information and media content in all formats, using various tools, in a critical, ethical, & effective way, in order to participate and engage in personal, professional, & societal activities”.

Dr. Lim also encouraged the participants to join in the MILCLICK campaign which is an initiative to promote MIL through social media. During the brain-storming session, the participants were challenged to create their own “MIL Clicks Pact” including making the R.E.V.I.E.W pledge which was crafted and adopted during the Global MIL week held in Kingston, Jamaica in 2017. The R.E.V.I.E.W pledge is a self-commitment to engage in critical thinking and influencing their peers in this regard online and offline.

The MIL forum was attended by representatives from government agencies, academia, civil societies and private companies including Mr. Noel George Puyat (Under Secretary-General of the Philippines Presidential Communication Operation Office, PCOO), Mr. Harold Clavite (Director-General of the Philippines Information Agency, PIA), Mr. Roy Tan (Public Outreach Manager, Facebook Singapore), Mr. Michael Woon (Policy Manager on Safety, Facebook Singapore), Mr. Tan Chee Wee (Covering Director, Digital Literacy, InfoComm Media Development Authority Singapore), Dr. Rachel Khan (Professor, University of the Philippines).

The conference was organized by ASEAN Secretariat and the Philippines Information Authority (PIA) with the support from the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF).
