The Director of UNESCO Office Jakarta met with the Minister for Research and Technology, Prof. Mohammad Gusti Hatta, at the Ministry of Research and Technology this morning (22 February 2013). The meeting was to discuss the role of Science, Technology and Innovation in the Post-2015 Development Agenda.

At the meeting, the Director explained that the Post-2015 Agenda presents an opportunity to shape a vision for a sustainable future by addressing important global challenges. The development of solutions to these global challenges will be based on sound Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI). However, a lesson to be learned from the MDG Agenda is the difficulty in positioning a specific role for STI in support of the Development Goals. The Post-2015 Agenda will likely provide better opportunities to position clear roles of STI to guide the successful implementation of an ambitious Post-2015 Agenda.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has been appointed as one of the co-Chairs of the High-Level Panel by the Secretary General. The Panel is expected to submit a report to the Secretary General in a few months’ time. This provides a good opportunity for Indonesia to ensure the inclusion of the role of STI in the supporting documentsfor the High-level Panel report on the Post-2015 agenda.

Sharing the same view, the Minister of Research and Technology has therefore taken the initiative to hold a national consultation workshop on the role of STI in thePost-2015 Agenda, with the next High-level Panel in Bali, to be held at the end of March, in mind. The STI national consultation workshop will be held in the first or second week of March. Indonesian stakeholders of STI and experts from research agencies, universities, and the Ministry of Education and Culture will be invited to the workshop.
At the end of the meeting, Prof. Mohammad Gusti Hatta presented the Director with a book on 104 Indonesian Innovations.
