Earth Day Network Philippines Meets with UNESCO Jakarta

Earth Day Network Philippines and UNESCO Jakarta held a meeting on 19 June 2017 at Crimson Hotel, Muntinlupa City, Philippines.

The meeting was lead by Dr. Shahbaz Khan, Director and Representative, UNESCO Jakarta Office and Ms. Carmelita Salvador, Vice President, Earth Day Network Philippines. Also in attendance are Mr. Marmon A. Pagunsan, International Consultant (Education), UNESCO Jakarta Office, Mr. Ryan Vita, Executive Director, Earth Day Network Philippines and Dr. Olivia la O’ Castillo, Former Board Member, United Nations Secretary-Generals’ Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation (UNSGAB).

Earth Day Network Philippines expressed its sincere appreciation to UNESCO Jakarta Office for accommodating its request for a meeting. Earth Day Network Philippines presented its various initiatives in the country such as reforestation projects with native and endemic trees, livelihood training and intersperse trees planting. It also shared that it has forged partnerships with non-government and government organisations in the Philippines such as Bases Conversion and Development Authority and Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

UNESCO Jakarta Office conveyed its sincere appreciation to Earth Day Network Philippines for its interest in partnership and collaboration. It shared its mandate and interest for support, partnership and collaboration. It shared its previous initiatives that is relevant to the core advocacies and programs of Earth Day Network Philippines such as sustainability science, environmental education, community learning centers, climate change education and education for sustainable development.

Both institutions discussed to explore the possibility of developing a joint project proposal. UNESCO will provide its technical expertise in the development of joint project proposal which could include the establishment of community learning center for “socio-ecological education” and “eco-prenuership.” Earth Day Network Philippines will provide inputs based on its experiences in the country as well as arrange for the field visits and prospective donor meetings whenever possible.

UNESCO Jakarta Office presented to Earth Day Network Philippines a copy of “Climate Change Education for Asia Pacific Small Island Developing States,” a UNESCO publication supported by Malaysia Funds-in-Trust.

The meeting concluded with high note of assurances from both institutions to further deepen the cooperation, partnership and mutual support for the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals.
