International Symposium for Memory of the World Opens in Kuala Lumpur

8 May, Kuala Lumpur. The effort to preserve documentary heritage received boost today with the kick-off of an international symposium held at the Malaysian Tourism Centre (MATIC) in Kuala Lumpur today.

The symposium titled “Preservation and Access: Southeast Asia’s Documentary Heritage in the Digital Age” was jointly organized by UNESCO, ASEAN, and with the support from the Ministry of Tourism and Culture of Malaysia. 

Mr Frank La Rue, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information, Dr. Shahbaz Khan, Director and Representative of UNESCO Office in Jakarta, and Mr. Vongthep Arthakaivalvatee, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for Socio-Cultural Community gave welcome remarks at the Opening Ceremony. The symposium was official opened by H.E Datuk Rashidi Hasbullah, Deputy Secretary General of Ministry of Tourism and Culture.

Local and international experts gave presentations on various aspects of preservation of documentary heritage ranging from how to strengthen international cooperation, improve preservation strategies, as well as exploring the issues of access to documentary heritage materials.

Speakers included Mr. Azemi Bin Abdul Aziz, President of Southeast Asia Regional Branch of the International Council on Archives (SARBICA); Mr. Li Minghua, Chair of the Memory of the World Committee for Asia and the Pacific (MOWCAP); Dr M R Rujaya Abhakorn, Centre Director of SEAMEO Regional Centre for Archaeology and Fine Arts; Ms. Sarah CC Choy, Co-Author UNESCO/PERSIST; Dr Ray Edmondson; Dr Vu Thi Minh Huong, Vice-Chair MOWCAP; Dr. Sarah Kenderdine, Director of Laboratory for Innovation in Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums (iGLAM), Mr. Eric Chin, Director of the National Archive Singapore and Ms. Kamariah Abu Samah, Director, Centre for Malay Documentation, Malay Institute of Language and Literature.

The symposium is a prelude to a 3-day expert consultation on the implementation of the “UNESCO’s Recommendation Concerning the Preservation of, and Access to, Documentary Heritage including in the Digital Form” which will begin from 9 to 11 May at the same venue.
