30.04.2014 - UNESCO Office in Jakarta

Launching of the World Crafts Council Award of Excellence for Handicrafts

The launching of the first World Crafts Council Award of Excellence for Handicrafts was organized in Jakarta on 22 April 2014. This year the National Crafts Council of Indonesia in cooperation with the Ministry of Trade of the Republic of Indonesia will be the host for the 2014 evaluation cycle in close collaboration with the World Crafts Council - Asia Pacific Region (WCC-APR).

Established to encourage craft-workers to use traditional skills and materials, the “Award of Excellence for Handicrafts” programme was established by UNESCO in 2001 (formerly known as the ‘SEAL of Excellence’ programme) aimed to ensure the continuation of traditional knowledge and skills and the preservation of cultural diversity in the region. Owing to its success, the programme has been expanded worldwide until 2012. WCC will continue the programme under patronage of UNESCO and will be starting within Asia Pacific region in 2014.

The WCC Award of Excellence for Handicrafts aims to promote quality crafts that uphold rigorous standards of excellence. It aims to ensure that when consumers buy awarded handicrafts, they are buying high quality, culturally authentic products that have been manufactured in a socially-responsible manner with respect for the environment.

Applications are now open for the 2014 WCC “Award of Excellence for Handicrafts” in Southeast Asia, South Asia and South Pacific. A panel of experts in design and handicraft production and promotion will meet in August 2014 in Jakarta, Indonesia to review submissions across a variety of craft categories which are produced from textiles, natural fibers, ceramics, wood, metal, stone, and other natural materials as well as composite materials.

This year’s winning products will be exhibited during the WCC Golden Jubilee Celebration Summit which will be organized by WCC in cooperation with the Dongyang Government and China Arts and Crafts Association in October 2014.
