Meeting with APCEIU, the UNESCO Category 2 Institute in Seoul
Jakarta, Wednesday, June 26, 2013. UNESCO Office Jakarta hosted a meeting with APCEIU (The Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding) and senior representatives from the South Korea Ministry of Education on the subject ‘international understanding’ and ‘a culture of peace’. APCEIU is a UNESCO category II institute committed to enhancing Education for International Understanding (EIU) in the Asia-Pacific region.
The meeting was held to better understand the programme scope and key initiatives of APCEIU’s and UNESCO Jakarta Office in this field. The meeting also discussed areas of mutual interest and explored ways to deepen and expand educational cooperation between UNESCO and APCEIU. The discussion focused, amongst others, on the key questions of the 21st century, and the challenge to address these in a comprehensive manner in the upcoming Post-2015 Development Agenda, the importance of continuation and expansion of an ‘education for sustainable development (ESD)’ approach under the new agenda, and the need to focus on Peace and Security’ as part of the new agenda. UNESCO shared information on its programmes in Green Schools, ESD, the World Culture in Development Forum (alte 2013), and the power of peace event (early 2014).
The meeting was attended by Ms. Young-soon Kang (Director General, International Cooperation Bureau, Ministry of Education), Mr. Utak Chung (APCEIU, Director), Ms. Jiyoung Kim (APCEIU, Assistant Programme Specialist), Ms. Yangsook Lee (APCEIU, Chief of International Teacher Exchange Team), Ms. Saerom Lee (APCEIU, Assistant Programme Specialist) and Professor Kyung-hee Choi (Ewha Womens University).
