“Opening Ceremony of World Water Day 2013 celebrations”

“Opening Ceremony of World Water Day 2013 celebrations” followed by a “Dialogue on Water Challenges and Solutions for Post-2015 Agenda”, 18 March 2013, Jakarta.

Within  the  framework  of  the  "World  Water  Day  2013"  declared  as  the “International Year of Water Cooperation”, UNESCO Office Jakarta, in collaboration with Gerakan Ciliwung Bersih and Indonesian Global Compact Network organized the “Opening Ceremony of World Water Day 2013 celebrations” and a “Dialogue on Water Challenges and Solutions for Post-2015 Agenda” on 18 March 2013 at PPM Manajemen, Jakarta.

The World Water Day 2013 celebrations were officially launched by Prof. Hubert Gijzen, Director of the UNESCO Regional Science Bureau for Asia and the Pacific, Ms Erna Witoelar, Chair of Gerakan Ciliwung Bersih Governing Board (Clean Ciliwung Movement) and former UN Special Ambassador for MDGs in Asia-Pacific and Mr Y.W. Junardy, President of Indonesia Global Compact Network.

The opening was followed by presentations from international water experts such as Dr. Eugene Z. Stakhiv, Co-chair of the Steering Committee of IWRM Guidelines at River Basin Level, on Rational Solutions for Water Challenges; Dr. Olusanjo A. Bamgboye, Executive Director of National Water Resources Institute, Kaduna, Nigeria on Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) prospectives in Africa; Dr. Keizrul Bin Abdullah, Chairperson of Network of Asian River Basin Organizations (NARBO) on Water Management Challenges in the River Basins; Dr. Alexandr Osipov, Science Officer at UNESCO Office Tashkent, Uzbeksistan on IWRM perspectives in Central Asia; and Dr. Hidayat Pawitan, Laboratorium Hidrometeorologi Bogor, on Indonesian challenges and opportunities.

This was followed by a “Dialogue on Water Challenges and Solutions for Post-2015 Agenda”. The participants highlighted water-related issues and recommended solutions in the context of Post-2015 agenda based on the document “Beyond 2015 – A Paradigm Shift in Water Management to Realise the Future We Want for All” developed by UNESCO on March 2013.

The event was attended by international water experts and representatives from Indonesian government institutions, academia, private sector, and civil society.
