Rights of people with disabilities at the center of the UN celebrations of the Human Rights day in Indonesia
UNESCO, in collaboration with ILO and the UN Information Centre is celebrating the Human Rights Day next December 10 on the topic of participation and social inclusion of people with disabilities.
The celebrations, that will take place Pondok Indah Mall II during all day, include an interactive talk show featuring persons with disabilities (PWD) that have achieved important progress towards the integration of people living with disabilities; Music performances by professional musicians in collaboration with PWD professional musicians; And art and business exhibitions by PWD.
With the slogan ‘My Voice Counts’ this event will appeal to audiences from many backgrounds and of all ages but in particular because of its central theme of ‘participation’ and ‘inclusion’, for people with disabilities it intends to raise awareness on the UNCRPD among DPOs, policy-makers and legislators. As such, it will raise awareness about the UN Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities among decision makers, media and development partners, and to promote the rights of people living with disability in Indonesia.
The Government of Indonesia ratified the United Nations Convention of the Rights of People with Disabilities in October 2011. The DPOs have seen this as a “new era” to promote disability rights and there has been increased attention on disability rights by the government lately. However, increased awareness on the UNCRPD and stronger institutions for the promotion of disable people rights are still needed in Indonesia.
Disability is increasingly recognised as a human rights issue. The gradual shift in understanding and perception, towards a human rights based approach, builds upon the emergence of the social model of disability. The social model locates discrimination in society creating the barriers to inclusion and equal rights rather than seeing an individual as the problem - and in need of medical treatment or charity. This paradigm sifting culminated with the adoption of the Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities by the UN General Assembly in December 2006.
