UNESCO Office Jakarta has signed an agreement with George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI) on 30 January 2019 to implement a project “Exploring World Heritage Sites in Southeast Asia”, supported by the Japanese Funds-in-Trust to UNESCO.

The project aims to empower local communities through the revitalization of creative industries, interpretation centres and museums linked to a World Heritage site. Through this partnership, GTWHI, in collaboration with the Penang State Government, museum association, civil society organization and local community, will implement a series of activities in George Town, including:
(i)    Capacity building of George Town’s cultural entrepreneurs in product development and improvement;
(ii)    Establishment of cultural experiencing activities for tourists in a local museum and/or interpretation centre, such as cultural product-making workshops, traditional wedding experience, game sessions etc.
(iii)    Public information tool to introduce the local cultural industries and traditions of George Town to visitors;
(iv)    Recognition mechanism to acknowledge the heritage work of local communities and cultural entrepreneurs.

GTWHI has conducted a survey in November 2019 to the local communities and received their feedback on the proposed activities. Currently the project has been initiating the process to set up a gallery for the cultural experiencing activity and production of a tabletop game. Two capacity-building workshops have also been planned in the fourth quarter of 2019.

Through this project, GTWHI and UNESCO are aiming to develop good practices in linking a world heritage status with the socio-economic well-being of the local communities. In its process of encouraging the local crafters to create products related to the cultural asset of George Town, the project is also reassuring the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage of George Town.

Two World Heritage sites have been chosen as the pilot sites of the project, i.e. Melaka and George Town, Historic Cities of the Straits of Malacca, in Malaysia and Historic City of Vigan in the Philippines. Subsequently the same partnership will also be established with Melaka and Vigan.
