UNESCO Jakarta Hosts Japan Funds in Trust Annual Review Meeting

On 26 July 2017, the Government of Japan (GoJ) representatives from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan (MEXT) participated in the Annual Review Meeting of “Japanese Funds-in-Trust (JFIT) for Scientific Programmes on Global Challenges in Asia and the Pacific Region”.

UNESCO has enjoyed a long-standing and solid cooperation with the GoJ through the JFIT since 1969. Among the various series of JFIT covering all the fields of UNESCO, MEXT has been supporting the Natural Sciences activities in Asia and the Pacific region for more than 40 years.

On 26 July 2017, the Annual Review Meeting of the Japanese Funds-in-Trust for Scientific Programmes on Global Challenges in Asia and the Pacific Region was held in UNESCO Office in Jakarta. MEXT, the Permanent Delegation of Japan to UNESCO, and the Embassy of Japan to Indonesia have participated from the GoJ, while Jakarta Office, IOC/WESTPAC Secretariat, and the relevant divisions in the Headquarters have participated from UNESCO.

Opened by Mr. Shahbaz Khan, the Director and Representative of UNESCO Office in Jakarta, and by Mr. Yosuke Kobayashi, the Director for International Strategic Planning, Office of the Director-General for International Affairs, MEXT (Deputy Secretary-General of the Japanese National Commission for UNESCO), the meeting reviewed the progress of the projects and discussed on new project proposals.

The discussion focused, but was not limited to the catalytic role of JFIT for Science in Asia and the Pacific region, as well as the leading role of Japan played through the JFIT projects. Especially, the initiative of fostering synergies among the different UNESCO Programmes was highly emphasized, along with the contribution towards the Sustainable Development Goals. Finally, the new strategy on JFIT for Science was adopted, which will support the 2030 Agenda and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.
