Youth Engagement with the U.N.: UNESCO’s Lecture at University Prof. Dr. Moestopo (Beragama)

Mr. Charaf Ahmimed and Mr Daniel Ruiz-de-Garibay, with UNESCO Jakarta Office, delivered a lecture on Youth and the UN at the University of Prof. Dr. Moestopo (Beragama). The lecture is part of UN for You (UN 4 U) campaign, to commemorate UN day which falls every 24 October.

Attended by approximately two hundred fifty enthusiastic students, the lecture was opened by the Dean of Faculty of Social Science and Political Science, Drs. Himsar Silaban. The lecture was delivered in English and Mr. Ahmimed, Head of the Social and Human Sciences Unit with UNESCO Jakarta Office introduced the UN system, including its history, its purpose and its achievements. 

Mr. Ahmimed observed the important role of Indonesia in the United Nations and he praised the role of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in his duty as a co-Chair of the UN High Panel on the Post-2015.

The presentation was followed by a question and answer session where students took full advantage to ask very interesting questions. A short video was then played to provide more information to the students on the role of the United Nations. 

The second session of the lecture was delivered by Mr. Daniel Ruiz de Garibay, Assistant Programme Specialist, who presented on the issue of “Youth and The United Nations”. He talked about UNESCO’s work on youth and he underlined the importance of young women and men as agents of change. Upon completing his lecture, Mr. Ruiz de Garibay provided the opportunity for students to discuss and ask questions related to youth civic participation. 

The lecture concluded with invitation to the students to contribute and join the United Nations agencies through internship programmes.
