Job Title: Intern for Social and Human Sciences Unit (SHS) – UNESCO Office in Jakarta (Non-remunerated position)

Duty Station: Jakarta, Indonesia

Starting Date: Rolling basis (next opening from June 2018)

Duration of Internship: A minimum of 3 (three) months

 

BACKGROUND

UNESCO is the United Nations organization with the specialized mandate to promote the use of Social and Human Sciences (SHS) to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by enhancing the understanding of complex contemporary challenges, in particular social inclusion and reduction of inequalities. This mission is carried out from the UNESCO Jakarta Office by fostering equitable and inclusive social development based on universal ethical and human rights principles in Asia and the Pacific. Specifically, SHS works closely with the government and civil society to build capacities for inclusive and evidence-based policy-making, and promote advocacy and awareness-raising to foster a culture of human rights, gender equality, and peace. These approaches are used in all three of the thematic areas of work: building inclusive societies, sustainable science, and bioethics.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the overall authority of the Director of UNESCO Office in Jakarta and the direct supervision of the Programme Specialist of Social and Human Sciences of the UNESCO Office in Jakarta, the intern will support the work of UNESCO through preforming the following tasks:

  • Assist in the implementation and monitoring of projects of the Social and Human Sciences (SHS) unit relating to Sustainable Development Goals, Social Inclusion and Human Rights, with a geographical focus on Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and Timor-Leste;
  • Provide assistance in the coordination of project planning and implementation, report writing, and project management (including monitoring and technical administrative reporting) for the SHS projects and initiatives;
  • Assist in project proposal development and identification of funding opportunities, particularly relating to human rights and social inclusion, that are in line with UNESCO’s overall global priorities as outlined in the Medium Term Strategy as well as respond to issues in respective countries under the responsibility of the UNESCO Jakarta Cluster Office;
  • Liaise with UNESCO Headquarters in order to assist in the implementation of the SHS activities;
  • Liaise with Indonesian and regional partners involved for the implementation of UNESCO SHS Programme, including the UNESCO National Commissions, other government agencies, NGOs, research institutions and others;
  • Identify, study, and produce documents on topics relating to human rights and social inclusion that are relevant to current and future SHS programmes;
  • Carry out any other tasks that may be assigned by the Programme Specialist of SHS and Director of UNESCO Jakarta Office, respectively. 

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
After the completion of the internship, the intern will have:

  • Acquired an in-depth knowledge of SHS programmes relating to SDGs, human rights, and social inclusion in the context of the cluster countries of the UNESCO Jakarta Office;
  • Increased their skills to engage and cooperate with diverse stakeholders from a number of different backgrounds, including UN agencies, government agencies, and NGOs;
  • Gained extensive project management experience, working on the current SHS portfolio relating to human rights, and disability and social inclusion policy;
  • Strengthened his/her analytical, communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills, particularly in a multicultural environment;
  • Gained extensive project development and fundraising skills, including the ability to identify potential project partners.

 

WORKING DAYS AND WORK SCHEDULE

5 (five) working days, from Monday to Friday, or 40 (forty) hours per week with the working hours from 08:00 to 17:00 hours and one-hour break from 12:00 to 13:00 hours. Leave days are calculated as 2.5 days per one completed month.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Applicants must currently be enrolled in a post-graduate (Masters) degree programme in a university or equivalent institution, at the time of application;
  • Students should be undertaking studies in areas related to political science, anthropology, international relations, international law, international development, sociology or other social sciences related degrees;
  • Good interpersonal skills with the willingness to learn and work in a multicultural environment;
  • Up to date knowledge on human rights issues, international and regional human rights mechanisms and practices, particularly relating to the Southeast Asian region;
  • Excellent written and verbal English skills (knowledge in Bahasa Indonesia is a strength);
  • Good attention to detail, multi-tasking, and organizational skills;
  • Ability to handle multiple concurrent projects and activities to organize own work priorities and deadlines.
