Job Title: Intern for Water and Environmental Science Unit (WES) – UNESCO Office in Jakarta (Non-remunerated position)

Duty Station: Jakarta, Indonesia

Starting Date: as soon as possible

Duration of Internship: A minimum of 3 (three) months

BACKGROUND

UNESCO works to advance and promote science in the interests of peace, sustainable development and human security and well-being, in close collaboration with its Member States and a wide variety of partners. It is the only United Nations specialized agency with a specific mandate for science. This mission is carried out by the UNESCO Office Jakarta, as the Regional Bureau for Sciences in Asia and the Pacific, through its Water and Environmental Sciences programme which links UNESCO’s intergovernmental programmes and initiatives under the International Hydrological Programme (IHP), Man and the Biosphere programme, International Geosciences and Geoparks programme (IGGP) as well as a number of cross-cutting thematic initiatives in support of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals across Asia and the Pacific.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the overall authority of the Director of UNESCO Office in Jakarta and the direct supervision of the Senior Programme Specialist of Water and Environmental Sciences of the UNESCO Office in Jakarta, the intern will  assist the Water and Environmental Sciences Unit in the implementation of the following UNESCO programmes in the Natural Sciences Sector:

  1. International Hydrological Programme (IHP), Regional Steering Committee Meeting for Asia and the Pacific (RSC)
  2. Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme, Asia Pacific Biosphere Reserves Network (APBRN) and Southeast Asia Biosphere Reserves Network (SeaBRnet).
  3. Natural World Heritage (WH) sites under the World Heritage Convention.
  4. UNESCO Global Geoparks Network under the International Geoparks and Geosciences Programme

 

For these projects, the intern will carry out the following tasks:
Provide assistance in the coordination of project implementation, report writing, and project management (including monitoring, technical and administrative reporting).

  1. Assist in project proposal development and identification of funding opportunities, particularly relating to water and environment issues, that are in line with UNESCO’s overall global priorities as outlined in the Medium Term Strategy as well as respond to issues in respective countries under the responsibility of the UNESCO Jakarta Cluster Office;
  2. Assist in the liaison  with UNESCO Headquarters, Indonesian and regional partners involved in the implementation of the UNESCO Programmes, including government agencies, NGOs, research institutions and others;
  3. Identify, study and contribute to the development of documents on topics related to water, environment, ecology, geology and sciences in general.
  4. Carry out any other tasks that may be assigned by the Senior Programme Specialist of WES and Director of UNESCO Jakarta Office, respectively.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After the completion of the internship, the intern will have:

  1. Acquired an in-depth knowledge of WES programmes relating to SDGs, water and environmental science of the UNESCO Jakarta Office;
  2. Increased their skills to engage and cooperate with diverse stakeholders from a number of different backgrounds, including UN agencies, government agencies, and NGOs;
  3. Gained extensive project management experience, working on the current WES portfolio relating to water and environmental policy;
  4. Strengthened his/her analytical, communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills, particularly in a multicultural environment;
  5. Gained extensive project development and fundraising skills, including the ability to identify potential project partners.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Enrolment at the time of application in a post-graduate (Masters) degree programme in a university or equivalent institution, in environmental sciences, water science , engineering, environmental management, international development, or other related degree programmes;
  • Good interpersonal skills with the willingness to learn and work in a multicultural environment;
  • Up to date knowledge on water and environmental issues, particularly relating to Asia and the Pacific;
  • Excellent written and verbal English skills (knowledge of Bahasa Indonesia is a strength);
  • Good attention to detail, multi-tasking, and organizational skills;
  • Ability to handle multiple concurrent projects and activities to organize own work priorities and deadlines.

WORKING DAYS AND WORK SCHEDULE
5 (five) working days, from Monday to Friday, or 40 (forty) hours per week with the working hours from 08:00 to 17:00 hours and one-hour break from 12:00 to 13:00 hours. Leave days are calculated as 2.5 days per one completed month, in addition to official United Nations holidays in Indonesia.
