To improve the management of conservation of the tropical forests of Timor Leste

Since 2010, and with the support of the Spanish Autonomous Organization for National Parks (OAPN), UNESCO is working together with the Government of Timor Leste in improving environmental conservation and sustainable interactions between communities and their natural environment in the Nino Konis Santana National Park. NKSNP is the only national park in Timor Leste and presents a good potential to also become the first Biosphere Reserve in the country. UNESCO is assisting in carrying the first steps for the nomination of the site a as BR, with the overall objective to improve its management, through participatory approaches that will ensure the long term conservation of its natural and cultural assets, while providing the local communities with sustainable sources of income.
