25.04.2018|UNESCO Office in Afghanistan, in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Culture (MoIC), organized a three-day workshop on the implementation of the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. The workshop, which was held at the National Museum of Afghanistan, took place between 22 and 24 April 2018.

The three-day workshop, which is the first in a series of joint-initiatives that UNESCO and MoIC will organize in 2018 and 2019, is a part of a global capacity-building strategy that UNESCO is developing in Afghanistan, as a comprehensive and long-term engagement aiming at assisting in the development of institutional and professional environments for the safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Afghanistan has ratified the 2003 Convention in March 2009, and is currently in the process of developing an Intangible Cultural Heritage Policy and initiating the establishment of a national Intangible Cultural Heritage inventory. The workshop, which was attended by representatives of the President’s Office, Chief Executive Office, staff from different departments within MoIC, other relevant ministries, civil society, universities, media and representatives from Kandahar, Badakshan, Nangarhar and Herat, aimed at providing relevant stakeholders in Afghanistan with a better understanding of the necessary mechanisms to implement the Convention.

In the months to come, UNESCO will organize additional capacity-building initiatives, working directly with practitioners and Intangible Cultural Heritage bearers, in order to provide support in the process of identifying and documenting their own traditional knowledge and practices. UNESCO will continue working closely with the MoIC and other relevant ministries and stakeholders and remains committed to continue providing assistance in the safeguarding of the rich and diverse Intangible Cultural Heritage of Afghanistan.
