UNESCO Director pays visit to Education Radio and TV
Kabul, Afghanistan| Mr Paolo Fontani, UNESCO Director and Representative in Afghanistan, had an official visit to Education Radio and Television (ERTV). During the visit he had a meeting with ERTV Director Mr Safiullah Zeer to discuss future developments in the cooperation between UNESCO and ERTV, as well as general policy issues related to the media sector in Afghanistan.
During the visit, Mr Fontani took a tour of the ERTV building, which was completely rebuilt in 2004 with assistance from UNESCO and the Government of Italy. Since 2003 UNESCO, funded by the Government of Italy, has supported ERTV to establish, conduct and develop its core mission of providing education to all.
After visiting each department and observing the assistance that UNESCO has provided in the last ten years, Mr Fontani assured Mr Zeer of UNESCO’s continuous commitment.
The key development objectives of UNESCO’s assistance is to use Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to support the Vision Statement of the Ministry of Education as articulated in its National Strategic Education Plan (1389-1393/2010-2014) as well as in the National Priority Programme (NPP), “Improving access to education in deprived areas”. The dissemination of educational programming through radio and television – for teachers, students, and the general public- can reach remote and insecure areas, provide advocacy campaigns to change attitudes, reach women and girls at home, bring central government expertise to provinces through materials’ design, feedback tutorials and streaming through the web.
