@UNESCO/Mohammad Amin Sadiqi

With a grant from the Government of Japan, the Programme for Enhancement of Literacy in Afghanistan (ELA) is one of the largest literacy interventions under the framework of UNESCO’s Literacy Initiative for Empowerment (LIFE) in Afghanistan, which was designated as the national framework for action to promote literacy.

ELA will provide literacy education to 600,000 youths and adult illiterates (60% will be female) as well as skill development and income generation opportunities within 18 provinces of Afghanistan. In addition, building institutional and human capacities of the National Literacy Centre is one of the core objectives of the programme, so that quality literacy education will be sustained within the country after completion of the programme.

Through the ELA, UNESCO and the Afghan Ministry of Education aim at the achievement of literacy goals set in the Afghan National Education Strategic Plan thereby contributing to building a peaceful and sustainable society in Afghanistan.
