Media campaign to address the role of political parties for safety of journalists
The UNESCO Office in Kathmandu is starting a media-based campaign addressing the role of political parties and political interest groups related to the safety of journalists and the freedom of expression beginning from 23 July.
A weekly 30 minutes long television show with the representatives of major political parties in the Constituent Assembly will be aired every Wednesday at 8:50 p.m. from the Nepal Television (NTV) under the show name “ABHIBYAKTI - the expression”. The objective of the programme is to observe the commitments of political parties in safeguarding journalists and to discuss key national and international instruments concerning free expression and the safety of journalists. Tanka Aryal, an expert in Freedom of Expression and Prakash Ghimire, the host of the show will facilitate the dialogues.
Dinanath Sharma, spokesperson of UCPN-Maoist and Dilendra Badu, spokesperson of Nepali Congress are invited as the guests in tomorrow’s discussion (July 23, 2014 8:50 p.m., NTV). The campaign is initiated under the UNESCO/UNPFN project “Increasing the Safety of Journalists”.
