Based on UNESCO's unique mandate in the field of culture, the Protecting Our Heritage and Fostering Creativity Programme in the Kingston Cluster Office for the Caribbean is geared towards placing culture at the centre of development processes in Caribbean Countries.

In pursuit of the overarching goal of fostering cultural diversity, intercultural dialogue and a culture of peace, the strategic objectives of the Culture Programme are:

  • Strengthening the contribution of culture to sustainable development
  • Demonstrating the importance of exchange and dialogue among cultures to social cohesion and reconciliation in order to develop a culture of peace.
  • Sustainably protecting and enhancing cultural heritage

The actions under the Protecting Our Heritage and Fostering Creativity Programme are carried out under two Biennial Sectoral Priorities, namely:

  • Protecting and promoting heritage and cultural expressions
  • Advocating the inclusion of culture and intercultural dialogue in development policies to foster a culture of peace and non-violence

Under the first Biennial Sectoral Priority, planned activities focus on:

  • Effective implementation and monitoring of UNESCO's international standard-setting instruments (conventions) in culture, with emphasis on capacity-building, elaboration of policy tools, and sharing of knowledge and best practices.

Under the second Biennial Sectoral Priority, planned activities are designed to demonstrate the relevance of culture in aid effectiveness policies and mechanisms for promoting intercultural dialogue.

Programme and project activities are implemented in collaboration with the National Commissions for UNESCO, Ministries of Culture, universities, international and regional NGOs, national NGOs and cultural institutions in the Caribbean.
