UNESCO and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) will host an “Engineering for Sustainable Development” event to increase awareness regarding the role of engineering in sustainable development, to highlight the role of organizations to advance engineering as solution, and to encourage student interest in engineering.
UNESCO and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) will host a side-event on 14 June 2012 from 12:30 pm – 2:00 pm as part of the Forum on Science, Technology, and Innovation for Sustainable Development. The title of the session is “Engineering for Sustainable Development” and its objective is to increase public awareness regarding the need for engineering to achieve sustainable development goals, highlight the role of organizations, such as UNESCO and IEEE, to advance engineering as solution, and to encourage student excitement about engineering and how they can have a significant impact on their future. In addition to remarks by Gretchen Kalonji, ADG/SC, and Mr. Gordon Day, IEEE President, successful stories of engineering being used to achieve sustainable development goals will be shared by a panel of researchers from South America and Africa. In conclusion, the importance of engineering education and training will be highlighted in an interview with Brazilian university engineering students about their expectations for the future.
