The state of World Heritage in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Garamba, Kahuzi-Biega, Salonga, and Virunga National Parks and the Okapi Wildlife Reserve in the DRC comprise an outstanding diversity of habitats. All are World Heritage Sites. The Great Lakes region is home to threatened species such as the Mountain Gorilla and the Okapi and continues to suffer from political instability and massive poaching.

On 14 January 2011, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova meets with authorities from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to discuss strengthening protection of the five DRC sites on the List of World Heritage in Danger.
