Bassin de la Dordogne (France)

Bassin de la Dordogne, France, consists of the whole Dordogne watershed, which is a hydro system of 24 000 km2.  The Dordogne’s catchment area shelters great biodiversity and represents a range of mountainous landscapes. It contains one of the biggest estuaries in Europe.  Population density is low and there are no large cities.  Main activities include tourism based on natural and cultural heritage, agriculture and forest exploitation.  The area is one of the three most important hydroelectric power production centres in France. This creates considerable pressure on the water and aquatic ecosystems.
