Mount Hakusan Biosphere Reserve - Extension (Japan)

The extension represents a four-fold increase of the site which was designated as a biosphere reserve in 1980 and comoprises alpine, subalpine, and montane zones around the 2,700 metre-high Mount Hakusan. The extended reserve now includes Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama World Heritage site. Seventeen-thousand people live in the biosphere reserve.
