Minakami Biosphere Reserve (Japan)

The site includes the central divide of the rivers of the island of Honshu formed by a 2,000 metre high backbone. Large differences in environment between the eastern and western slopes as well as between mountainous and lowland areas create a distinct biological and cultural diversity. Over 21,000 people are living in the reserve, which has a total surface area of 91,368 ha. The main activities are agriculture and tourism.
