Ambassadors and representatives of Morocco, South Africa, the European Union, France, Germany, Switzerland, USAID, MINUSMA and the World Bank brought their support to UNESCO’s #Unite4Heritage campaign in a visit to the World Heritage site of Timbuktu.

Timbuktu mausoleums: final reconstruction phase underway (Mali)

The last stage of the reconstruction of the mausoleums of Timbuktu has been launched. Teams of builders and technical supervisors are now working on the rehabilitation of these World Heritage monuments destroyed by armed groups in 2012. Launched in March last year, the rehabilitation of these 14 mausoleums is scheduled to be completed in July 2015.  

Work is underway in the three mausoleums located in the cemeteries of the three saints (Sheikh Sidi Ben Amar, Sheikh Abdoul Kasim Al Taouati, and Sheikh Sidi El Mikki), as well as the mausoleums of Alpha Moya, Sidi Mahmoud, El Moktar, El Boukkou, and others scattered around the city.  

The first stage in the rehabilitation of cultural heritage of Timbuktu (Mali) is complete

Launched on 14 March 2014 in partnership with UNESCO, the rehabilitation work carried out on Sheik Baber Baba Idjé and Sheik Mahamane Al Fullani mausoleums of Timbuktu was just completed.

Residents of Timbuktu launched, on 14th March 2014, the reconstruction of World Heritage mausoleums damaged by the armed extremists who occupied the north and centre of Mali in 2012.
