UNESCO Director-General to Pay Official Visit to Malta

From 24 to 25 October 2016, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova will undertake her first official visit to the Republic of Malta.

As part of her visit, Ms Bokova will participate in the opening plenary of the 3rd Mediterranean Forum of the Anna Lindh Foundation for Intercultural Dialogue. The Director-General will address the Forum’s participants on how the Organization is contributing to the enhancement and improvement of mutual respect and understanding between cultures by empowering youth and civil society to become agents of dialogue, as well as on ways to prevent violent extremism and radicalization of youth in the Mediterranean region. The MED Forum will be co-chaired by Ms Elisabeth Guigou, President of the Anna Lindh Foundation and H.E. Mr George Vella, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malta.

The visit of the Director-General will be an opportunity to reaffirm the Organization’s commitment to further strengthen its cooperation with the Republic of Malta. The Director-General will meet with the President of Malta, H.E. Ms Marie Louise Coleiro Preca, and with the Prime Minister, Mr Joseph Muscat. Discussions will aim at taking stock of the existing cooperation between UNESCO and Malta and exploring ways to further strengthen this cooperation across the Organization’s fields of competence.

The Director-General’s visit will also be an occasion to celebrate United Nations Day in Malta, which occurs annually on 24 October to mark the anniversary of the entry into force of the UN Charter in 1945.
