European Union: A new Inter Campus Workshop at Palacio del Segundo Cabo
In May last, the joint UNESCO-EU project for safeguarding the Palacio Segundo Cabo in Havana received a new impulse from academia. The project is implemented by the Office of the Historian of Havana and aims at creating a multi-purpose center to foster intercultural dialogue between Cuba and Europe.
Some twenty young experts and Italian and Cuban professors gathered to participate in the second interdisciplinary workshop addressing the techniques of diagnosing and monitoring cultural heritage. The seminar built upon the experiences from the first edition in May 2010, organized under the auspices of the Association Sisto Mastrodicasa from Perugia (Italy) and the University San Gerónimo in Havana.
After a week, the participants showed the results of their analyses, which emphasized the importance of the diagnosis and systematic monitoring of the cultural heritage and presented new alternative techniques. Their efforts resulted also in drawing up a new registry of alterations and damages to the Palace, some of which had already been indicated in 2010. This will bring about greater efficiency and allow further progress in the project.
Invited professors and experts from the Office of the Historian as well as UNESCO and the EU Representatives, who attended the last day of the seminar, highly appreciated the quality of the workshop as well as its contribution to the rapprochement between Europeans and Cubans and to the international cultural cooperation.
