A determined, ambitious, passionate woman in science, awarded two Nobel Prizes (in Physics in 1903 and in Chemistry in 1911), the only person – man or woman – to have received this prestigious prize twice, Marie Curie is for the first time the heroine of a staged musical performance. The opera evokes the different facets of her life as a scientist, wife and mother, her ambitions and emotions including doubts and fears. The prestigious Gdansk Baltic Opera initiated this ambitious project.

The world premiere of the opera 'Madame Curie' will take place at UNESCO House on 15 November 2011, accompanied by an exhibition on the Life and Achievements of Maria Sklodowska-Curie. Archive photos, fragments of her diary and other rare documents have been put together by the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Museum, the Archives of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Polish Chemistry Society.

Both opera and exhibition are presented within the framework of the International Year of Chemistry and the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded to Marie Curie. Copies of the film Chemistry: all about you will be distributed on this occasion.
