For the first time, UNESCO celebrated United Nations Day, on 24 October, by inviting more than 900 students to the Organization’s Headquarters in Paris to deepen their knowledge of the United Nations, its agencies and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Organized with the Brussels based Regional Information Center of the United Nations, the event gave young people the opportunity to meet and exchange with over 50 professionals from UNESCO, the World Food Programme, the High Commissioner for Refugees, the United Nations Environment Programme, as well as the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the French Association for the United Nations.

Over the course of a few hours, enthusiastic students crowded the five thematic spaces set up for the day on People, Peace, Planet, Prosperity and Partnerships, as well as a Careers and Engagement stand.

Welcoming the students to UNESCO’s UN Day celebration, Director-General Irina Bokova stated: “Today we celebration the United Nations, we celebrate multilateralism, we celebrate our aspiration for peace and for sustainable development, through international cooperation in education, in culture, sciences, communication and information.”

On this occasion, the students participated in a number of awareness campaigns, notably, #Unite4Heritage, and learnt about volunteering and as well as the range of professions within the United Nations.

“We believe that if young people are uniting for heritage, for its protection, for intercultural dialogue, we will achieve peace, tolerance and better living for humanity,” said Irina Bokova.
