Director-General condemns attack on the Islamic Cultural Center of Quebec
"I condemn the attack against the Islamic cultural center of Quebec City, which cost the lives of at least six people and caused many victims. I wish to extend my condolences to the families and to express my support to the Government of Canada and Quebec. In the face of this attack on an institution of culture, education and spirituality, UNESCO strongly reaffirms the respect that is due to such places which are dedicated to sharing and bringing people and cultures closer together. In too many countries across the world, cultural centers are being targeted. The banalization of racist discourse and attacks on cultures or religions also contributes to a climate of mistrust and violence. These cowardly acts are an attempt to divide communities against each other -- more than ever, we must stand together to deepen and teach mutual understanding and the spirit of tolerance. "
UNESCO and Canada are working together to combat violent extremism. On October 30- 1 November 2016, UNESCO and the Government of Quebec, with the support of the Government of Canada, organized the International Conference on "Internet and the Radicalization of Youth: Prevention, Action and Living Together", to prevent youth radicalization through media and information literacy intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding.
