Director-General joins Diamond Jubilee of UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning

The Director-General will join the 60th anniversary celebrations of UNESCO’s Institute for Lifelong Learning in Hamburg with a call for a bolder policy focus on opportunities to learn at all stages of life as a key to educational and developmental success in the 21st century.

During her visit on 24 May, the Director-General will meet with the Mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, speak at the Hamburg Senate and at the University of Hamburg on the significance of lifelong learning for responding to global challenges.

The Institute was founded in the aftermath of World War Two to rebuild the grounds for peace in Europe through cooperation in education.  It played a pioneering role in putting adult education and lifelong learning on the policy map, first in Europe, and then globally.

Today, the Institute is a hub of research and exchange: it coordinates UNESCO’s Literacy Initiative for Empowerment in 35 countries, encourages the sharing of best practices, produces the Global Report on Adult Learning and Education reports and shepherds the International Conference on Adult Education – CONFINTEA – of which the most recent one was held in Belem, Brazil in 2009.
