Director-General meets King Sheikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain


On 18 May 2017, UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, met with His Majesty King Sheikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, during her official visit to the Kingdom of Bahrain.

The meeting was an opportunity to discuss cooperation between UNESCO and Bahrain in areas of mutual interest, especially in the fields of preventing violent extremism, interfaith dialogue and mutual understanding as well as protection of cultural heritage and education as key pillars of sustainable development.

The Director-General expressed deep appreciation to the King for his continuous support to the UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize for the Use of ICTs in Education and stressed that it was a flagship prize for UNESCO. 

The Director-General thanked Bahrain for its active contribution to UNESCO’s programmes and highlighted the importance of the longstanding partnership with the Kingdom. She congratulated the King’s efforts to strengthen peace and democracy, highlighting in particular the country’s commitment to education, culture and women empowerment. 

With regard to preventing violent extremism among youth, the Director-General highlighted the important role of young people in prevention, peace building and social cohesion. She insisted that it is not enough to counter violent extremism, we need to prevent this threat, and this starts on the benches of school.

His Majesty expressed deep appreciation of UNESCO's work in support of Bahrain's efforts to protect and preserve cultural heritage, educate the country’s citizens and build an inclusive society. "UNESCO is our home because it encourages interreligious dialogue, tolerance and preservation of people cultures" stated His Majesty.

On the same day, the Director-General met with the H.E. Sheikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Prime Minister of Bahrain, H.E. Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Minister of Foreign Affairs and H.E. Sheikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, Minister of Culture who accompanied her throughout the visit.

During her official visit to Bahrain, the Director-General attended a ceremony, with the Minister of Education H.E. Dr Majid bin Ali Al-Noaimi, honoring UNESCO Associated Schools (ASPnet) in Bahrain, and visited Bahrain’s Fort (Qal'at al-Bahrain) inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2005.  She also visited the Arab Regional Center for World Heritage (ARC-WH), a Category 2 Center under the auspices of UNESCO that was established in 2010 as an independent legal entity at the service of Arab States Parties to the World Heritage Convention as well as many other historic and cultural sites in Bahrain.
