Director-General meets the Minister of Culture of Bulgaria
On November 25th, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova met with the Minister of Culture, HE Mr. Vezhdi Rashidov, in Sofia.
The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss cooperation between Bulgaria and UNESCO in areas of mutual interest with a special focus on safeguarding intangible cultural heritage and steps undertaken in this direction.
Irina Bokova noted how highly she valued the deep partnership between the Ministry of Culture and UNESCO. She thanked Minister Rashidov for his engagement, efforts and the active commitment of the Ministry to the accomplishment of priority projects aimed at safeguarding and promoting Bulgaria’s heritage sites as essential parts of world heritage. She cited the important role led by the Regional Centre for the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage in South-East Europe, the first of its kind in Europe, and 8th in the world. She also expressed hope for the inscription of new elements and sites on the lists of intangible and tangible cultural heritage, underlining specifically the importance of the inclusion of the Royal Necropolis of Seuthopolis and the Danube Limes in the Tentative list of the World Cultural Heritage. She emphasized the good partnership and work on listing new objects and elements will continue in the coming year as well.
For his part, the Minister of Culture expressed his deep gratitude to the Director-General for UNESCO’s invaluable support and her personal dedication in the protection and promotion of the Bulgarian culture and identity worldwide.
