Director-General meets US Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy and the Environment, Ms Catherine Novelli
On 18 September, the UNESCO Director-General, Ms Irina Bokova, met with Ms Catherine Novelli, United States Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy and the Environment, on the margins of the 14th meeting of the Broadband Commission for Sustainable Digital Development.
Irina Bokova thanked Ms Novelli for her commitment to the Broadband Commission, and to promoting universal broadband and content for all, to connect every woman and man. In this respect, the Director-General commended the Global Connect Initiative.
"We must make sure that technology plays a role in a concrete way through health, through sustainable energy, through education," said Ms Novelli.
Irina Bokova agreed, stating the idea guiding all UNESCO's action: "New technologies should be pervasive across the SDGs and 2030 Agenda." Ms Novelli noted in this respect the need to articulate the role of technology in a range of areas in order to make meaningful progress.
Discussion followed on UNESCO's action to promote multistakeholder approaches to the Internet, to nurture new technologies for human rights and fundamental freedoms, tolerance and respect.
Irina Bokova drew attention to UNESCO's work for education to prevent violent extremism, and to act against youth radicalisation -- including the forthcoming international conference on preventing youth radicalisation on the Internet, in Quebec, to which the Under-secretary was invited.
"We must build the foundations for resilient societies, nurturing all new technologies to empower women and men, to empower societies, to promote tolerance and peace," said Irina Bokova.
